Why Be Certified?
What is Certification and Why be Certified in Natural Animal Health?
The intent of certification through the American Council of Animal Naturopathy. is to provide assurance to the public that those we certify have successfully completed an approved, intensive, educational program and an evaluation process via a certification examination assessing their ability to provide professional, quality care as a natural animal health coach/consultant or species specific nutrition coach/consultant.
For practitioners, A.C.A.N. certification is much more than a credential. It’s the cornerstone of a successful career. Because even if you work in a state that does not require certification, being certified by us establishes you as a qualified, dedicated professional with the knowledge and skills to uphold high standards of excellence in animal naturopathy.
The American Council of Animal Naturopathy does not license we certify. Certification is recognized world-wide distinguishing the Certificant’s outstanding skills and professional expertise needed for successful completion of the certification examination.
While it is said that “experience is the greatest teacher,” certification “rounds you out.” Often, experience is strong in some areas, but not in others. Like education, experience rounds you out, giving exposure to ideas and approaches that may ordinarily be outside your comfort zone. In addition, being able to think outside your experience is an ingredient of leadership.
Being certified can make you better mentor. The ability to mentor is based greatly on experience however, the best mentors are those have education enabling them reach beyond their experience. They are able to extrapolate from their own education and experience to relate it to someone else’s entirely different experience.
Certification therefore is a statement or declaration that one has completed an intensive course of study, passed an examination or has otherwise met specified criteria for certification.
Certification provides the pet owner/consumer with more information about a practitioner. It also gives practitioners a way to increase their competency through a course of study and exams, and to advertise or inform others of their completion of this course of study.
By becoming certified in the field of natural animal health, and by maintaining your competency year after year via continuing education, you are saying to the public that you have met standards that have been established and verified by a third-party organization and that you are dedicated to maintaining quality in your work on a regular basis.
Certification establishes you as a continuous learner. Pet owners/consumers are always looking for professionals who never want to stop learning. Learning is a value unto itself, and those around you will respect and admire you for it, and sometimes may even be a little jealous!
Certification is Not to be Confused With Licensure.
A license is permission to do something that is otherwise forbidden. A license is granted by the government as a government privilege – NOT a right. A license involves the police power of the state. The purpose of licensing . whether admitted or not is to restrict entry and control a profession or activity.
Certification is based on the premise that there is a right to work.
